Hokkaido, where nature is bountiful, is said to be a land of harvests. Many agricultural foods are best in autumn.
Popular autumn vegetables of Hokkaido are potatoes, onions and pumpkins. Okadama-cho in Higashi-ku is famous for onion production. At supermarkets and JA farmers markets, gokinjo-yasai ( neighborhood vegetables) are sold at low prices. Takikomi-gohan cooked with mushroom and seasonal vegetables is recommended. If you drive to the suburbs of Sapporo including Jozankei and Yoichi, you can pick up fruit at many farms. Fresh and juicy apples and grapes can be eaten on the spot.
